Summary
The energy transition to a net zero CO2 society is widely recognized as a monumental challenge. Austria is in the preferred condition to have already a renewable energy production of 70% but only related to electricity. If the complete primary energy demand is considered, only about 30% are from renewables resources (incl. biogenic and geothermal). For all developed countries around the world, mobility and industry are the main challenges for decarbonization. AVL has created a study for energy end-use in a fully decarbonized energy scenario towards 2050. In this scenario, the electricity consumption will more than double compared to 2019 levels. This electricity demand can not be met by locally harvested renewables and as today Austria will stay an energy importer. In an optimistic scenario for energy import hydrogen could be available for as low as2€/kg (equivalent to 6 cent(€)/kWh). In such a scenario hydrogen production will be a key technology for decarbonization.
