Summary
The powertrain is the core of super sport cars and needs to be designed and engineered to give top performance and emotion to the driver. The stricter emission regulations put on top additional challenges for engine design and development leading also to the introduction of hybrid powertrains. In this paper, it is presented how the hybrid architecture, with E-Machine in P1 configuration, was exploited to conjugate performance and emission targets, leading to a unique turbo-matching concept on a high revving V8 internal combustion engine. Then the focus is moved to simulation work carried out to achieve the mentioned targets. Combustion system 3D CFD simulation was carried out searching for combustion speed maximization and mixture homogenization. On the mechanical development side, 1D and 3D multibody simulation were the enablers to manage high speed dynamics and loads. Furthermore, to be prepared for future challenges and even stricter regulations, E-fuels and pre-chamber concepts were investigated both via 3D CFD combustion system simulation and experimental campaign carried out on a single cylinder engine derived from the V8 engine.
