Summary

The EESM (electrically excited synchronous machine) has become an attractive alternative to PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motors) in recent years due to well-known boundaries such as stringent sustainability targets, fluctuating magnet prices and supply chain risks. Vitesco Technologies already has a large number of EESMs in series production and is developing a new EESM that can compete with existing PMSM technologies in terms of performance and cost. However, EESMs have specific characteristics that need to be considered in order to realize their full potential. This article explains the latest achievements of Vitesco Technologies in the field of EESM. It describes the differences between the two types of motors and presents a comparison of efficiencies as well as energy consumption in WLTC (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle). It also addresses important aspects to consider when using EESM as an auxiliary drive. Based on the improvements achieved, the EESM will become a new component of the EMR4 (Electronics Motor Reducer 4th generation) platform.
