Summary
Since 2020, SAG New Technologies has been developing liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage systems for heavy-duty vehicles and other applications that benefit from the high volumetric and gravimetric energy density of LH2. The introduction of liquid hydrogen as an energy carrier represents not only a technological innovation but also requires a fundamental reassessment of established validation and homologation processes.
Existing test standards and approval frameworks, largely developed for conventional powertrain technologies such as diesel vehicles, are only partially applicable to cryogenic hydrogen storage systems. This contribution discusses the specific challenges faced by an LH2 system supplier in achieving equivalent safety validation and in realizing a type-approved LH2 tank system for road use.
The presentation places particular emphasis on safety-relevant test procedures that address both regulatory requirements and the expectations of OEMs and the public. Owing to the novelty of LH₂ technology, validated operational experience remains limited in several areas, shifting a significant responsibility to manufacturers to demonstrate safe operation under real-world conditions. Practical insights into applied methodologies, test strategies, and key lessons learned from the development and validation of LH2 storage systems are presented.
