Summary

Sprayguided combustion systems offer the highest potential for fuel consumption reduction for gasoline engines. To explore these fuel consumption benefits, Siemens VDO developed an injection system ready for production, consisting of PiezoInjectors, a high pressure fuel pump for the system pressure of 20 MPa and an engine control unit with the respective driver stages and the necessary functions. Key component of the system is the injector. Its outward opening nozzle generates a stable spray under all engine operating conditions and a reliable ignition of the mixture. In addition, the high dynamics of the PiezoActuator allows extremely fast switching times of the injector and the realization of multiple injections during one working cycle. Due to that, excellent combustion results are achieved while at the same time the area of stratified operation is significantly enlarged towards higher engine speed and load values, as proven by respective engine evaluations. Siemens VDO offers a system to the automotive industry which provides a significant fuel consumption reduction to the base engine.
