Summary

In 2015, the world's second most populous country – the People's Republic of China – committed itself in the Paris Climate Agreement to achieve its maximum CO₂ emissions by 2030 at the latest and to cover its energy needs entirely from renewable energies by 2060.
Current analyses show that around 50% of all CO₂ emissions from transport are emitted by commercial vehicles. State-sponsored investment programs and ever-tightening emission and consumption regulations for traditional commercial vehicles have led to a massive increase in new
registrations of "New Energy Vehicles - NEVs" since the Corona phase. In the past calendar year 2025, the share of NEV ́s in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segment was already 25%.

China's on-road transport industry is based on classic long-haul business with high demands on punctuality. In the future, battery-electric vehicles will be used for daily distances of up to approx. 600km in China – in addition, hydrogen is seen as the most effective energy source.
FAW ́'s current investigations of hydrogen vehicles with fuel cells as well as combustion engines achieve an average consumption of approx. 10 kg/100km (49t GVW) ranges up to more than 800km. Current estimates of product and fuel costs as well as advantages and
disadvantages of these technologies predict a ramp-up of larger quantities from 2035+. The hydrogen combustion engine can be a "bridging solution" for efficient fuel cell applications due to its lower investment and product costs as well as cooling properties.
