Summary

The reduction of greenhouse gasses such as CO2 is mandatory to slow down global warming and to limit its impact on climate change. The electrification of the transportation sector will play a crucial role, and the introduction of electric vehicles will be a key lever for the reduction of the CO2 emissions.

In order to increase customer acceptance and to accelerate the switch to an electrified transportation sector, cost competitive solutions have to be found. The battery is the largest single cost item in an electric vehicle, and the cathode and anode active material of a battery contributes to more than 50% of the cost of a battery. Next to the cost of materials and battery, the CO2 foot print and recyclability have to be taken into account.

As one of the leading global players in cathode and silicon-anode material development and industrialization, Umicore will present an overview of advanced cathode and silicon-anode technologies. The focus will be on cost competitiveness and sustainability of the solutions that are being offered short as well as long term. Next to that, we will share our view on how the electric vehicle penetration will evolve and which role various chemistries will play in this as a start of an interactive discussion with the audience.
