Summary

With the global promotion of carbon neutrality policies, traditional fossil fuel ICE is gradually transitioning to carbon neutral fuel ICE, among which hydrogen ICE is one of the most important solutions. But for passenger cars, high pressure hydrogen storage tank is still a blockage from the perspective of both high cost and low space utilization in spite of that the hydrogen engine itself can be developed very well. From this point of view, transition from fossil fuel to carbon neutral fuel can’t be realized overnight and better be step by step.

At the same time, hybrid dedicated engines are replacing traditional internal combustion engines in passenger car market very quickly, especially for HEV and PHEV. Among all the high efficiency technologies, ultra-high dilution combustion technology supported by active pre-chamber is the enabler to realize more than 45% BTE. But the problem of active pre-chamber is that the hardware system is too complicated and directly causes high cost which will limit the promotion of this technology. Furthermore, injecting liquid fuel into the active pre-chamber will also cause cold start and PN emission issue, but high pressure gas fuel such as hydrogen can solve this problem. Due to the fact that active pre-chamber only needs about 5% over all combustion energy, a very small hydrogen tank can provide enough hydrogen required and this will be a huge advantage from both cost and space utilization point of view.
