Summary

Sustainable fuels, like ethanol, are significant contributors to CO2 reduction in the global transportation sector. Biofuels have been used successfully in many countries from low percentage like E10 to higher concentrations such as E85 in the EU and US. In 2003, Brazil introduced Flex Fuel Vehicles that are compatible with all gasoline/ethanol blend ratios up to E100. In the future, emerging countries such as India will also be considering significant increases in the Bio-ethanol fuel content similar to Brazil. Biofuels with very high ethanol content or even methanol require special measures for cold start due to the high flashpoint temperatures. For many years, different fuel heating systems have been used in Brazil to address this cold start challenge. Moreover, increasing stringent emissions legislations and lower cold start temperature requirements are making this more difficult. This paper presents the new BorgWarner heated tip port fuel injection system and test data showing the cold start and emission performance for Flex-Fuel applications in different markets. The new generation of BorgWarner’s heated tip injector and further refined control system offers significantly improved fuel heating characteristics. This enables compliance with future emission regulations while providing a very attractive value for the vehicle owner.
