Summary
The challenge of stricter emission limits and fuel consumption requirements with a strong focus on real driving emissions require efficient methods in the development of new engine and powertrain generations. Time-consuming and costly vehicle tests in distant regions can be carried out efficiently and realistically on a dynamic high-altitude and climate test bench according to the "ROAD TO RIG" concept. In cooperation between AUDI AG and MAGNA Powertrain, the simulation of driving cycles in terms of dynamics and driver influence was optimized on the high-altitude and climate test bench at MAGNA in St. Valentin, and furthermore a physical automatic transmission and a corresponding shift program was integrated. Either standard test cycles, RDE vehicle tests or extreme customer cycles (e.g. uphill driving with high load and a trailer at hot ambient temperatures), all results are presented with a very high level of reproducibility. In addition to the ambient temperature and humidity, the ambient pressure level is adjusted realistically depending on the road gradient and all driving resistances. Thanks to a high degree of automation, a wide variety of vehicle types and parameterizations can be tested and validated. This development approach gives the opportunity to reduce the number of cost-intensive prototype vehicles and enables efficient development from the concept phase to series development with the possibility of optimizing the interaction of internal combustion engines with electrified systems under different conditions (environment, load, stationary and dynamic).
