DENSO’s Contribution towards a CO2 Neutral Society Using Revolutionary, Unique E-Motor Technology and Intelligent Control Strategy

Summary
The automotive industry always had an obligation to comply with increasingly stringent emission and fuel consumption regulations. In particular, the social energy transition towards a “low-carbon” or “carbon-free” society represents a challenging mission for all suppliers and OEM’s. DENSO sees this as a great motivation and opportunity to consistently enhance proven technologies and help shaping the future of mobility. DENSO pursues a realistic approach with the so-called "3E+S" principle, the focus of energy policy on security of supply, economic efficiency and environmental protection, without sacrificing safety in order to achieve CO2 neutrality. DENSO will pursue a diversified approach by proactively using renewable energies, efficiently storing energy and further advancing energy management systems in vehicles. In the past, the latest powertrain concepts for internal combustion engines were discussed and proposed during this symposium. Within this framework, DENSO would like to present a newly developed electrified drivemodule, which should make a decisive contribution towards the realization of a CO2-neutral society. DENSO has been in the generator / starter business since 1949. With our MG (MotorGenerator), EPS (Electrical Power Steering), PCU (Power Control Unit), BMU (Battery Management Unit), we are already making a significant contribution to global CO2 reduction on the road. All our components are based on the highest quality standards with unique technology and a high degree of industrialization. Based on our extensive experience in the field of rotating machines and power electronics, DENSO is taking a further evolutionary step towards advanced powertrain modules. With regard to the advancing CASE mega trends, this new type of powertrain module should make a significant contribution to increase energy efficiency, safety and comfort. In this abstract, the presented concept is based on a completely new developed in-wheelmotor, using a unique electric motor technology. The module presented here comprises the following technologies fundamentally developed by DENSO:
• Maximization of the torque through a new magnetic flux concentration structure in combination with an outer rotor design, which makes a gearing unnecessary
• Minimization of iron loss and torque ripple through a new stator design, whereby a very low NVH level and high efficiency is achieved
DENSO wants to promote this new powertrain-module for in-wheel motor applications but as well as a generator for conventional ICE applications, which can be used for light duty and commercial vehicles. As part of this symposium, the advanced concept is complemented with the introduction of an intelligent control strategy. With this concept, DENSO is ready to pave the way for future mobility concepts with high energy efficiency, safety and comfort.
