Summary

The North American heavy-duty vehicle market has strong CO2 reduction targets, but also suffers an unclear regulatory environment with some states allowing hydrogen internal combustion engine trucks and some banning them. If the United States is to achieve the target of net-zero CO2 by 2050, all viable options must be available to satisfy the varied needs of trucking applications. In addition, significant progress in hydrogen availability is not likely to be made until there are more hydrogen consumers to generate demand. On top of the CO2 reductions required, the US is moving towards implementation of the strictest NOX regulation in the global market, with a limit of 0.035 g/hp-hr. An industry consortium was created to develop a technology demonstration vehicle that can prove the ability of a H2-ICE to both reduce CO2 emissions to essentially zero and to reduce NOX emissions well below the coming regulatory level. This paper will highlight the technical accomplishments of the program and show how H2-ICE can be a true zero-impact powertrain option for heavy-duty mobility.
