Summary

Volkswagen is combining the internal combustion engine with a 48V belt-driven starter generator to create a mild-hybrid electric vehicle (mHEV) powertrain concept. Alongside the regular 12V vehicle battery, the mHEV drive is also equipped with a 48V battery. This sustainable alliance will establish the basis for entry into the world of hybridisation at Volkswagen. The 48V mild hybrid assists the internal combustion engine during energyintensive operating phases, preferably with energy recuperated “for free” during deceleration phases. Furthermore, it enables periodic coasting with the internal combustion engine
switched off entirely. Depending on driving style, the mHEV system can save around 0.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in customer use. Moreover, this powertrain system delivers considerably improved off-the-line performance with the electric boost function as well as a smoother and more comfortable engine start.

Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
