Summary

Economic as well as environmental considerations make the use of alternative fuels increasingly attractive. With natural gas and hydrogen two fuels are available which are of particular interest not at least due to their CO2 reduction potential. The results of the experimental investigations of two dual-fuel combustion processes in a conventional DI diesel engine will be discussed in more detail in this contribution. A passenger car diesel engine was adapted so that both the pure diesel operation as well as the dual-fuel operation with CNG or hydrogen were possible. The alternative fuel gas should be injected into the intake manifold and the homogeneous gas-air mixture should be ignited by a diesel ignition-jet in the combustion chamber. The motivation to realize such a dual-fuel operation is mainly the reduction of CO2 emissions and the improvement of the soot-NOx trade-off by the simultaneous use of two established technologies.
