Summary

In the face of demands from consumers and governments alike, hybridization will need to be embraced quickly and on a global scale in order to meet carbon dioxide emission goals. However, conventional drivetrain variants will also continue to play an important role for automotive manufacturers over the coming ten to twenty years in terms of optimizing vehicle attributes, costs, and carbon dioxide emissions. In selecting the best possible transmission technology, manufacturers increasingly need to consider not only the transmission’s own efficiency and flexibility, but also its compatibility with compact, affordable, and powerful hybrid technologies.
This article examines the efficiency levels and the influence of current conventional transmission technologies on carbon dioxide emissions in the WLTP cycle and real-world driving conditions, and, in connection with this, also the next generation of GETRAG DCT technology and three additional concepts in the hybrid drivetrain: the 48V mild hybrid, integrated high-voltage hybrid systems, and the combination of the high-voltage hybrid with an AWD e-Drive as a P4 hybrid.
In this context, Magna and GETRAG have focused on the analysis of carbon dioxide emissions potential of transmission technologies in connection with vehicle performance. This involves demonstrating cost-optimized, modular solution options to address the conflicting goals of automotive manufacturers.
