Summary

The on-highway heavy-duty transportation industry in Europe and the US have been tasked with significant CO2 reduction to address the climate change concern. In Europe this is driven by CO2 legislation and in the US by EPA GHG (Phase III) and CARB Clean Fleet Regulations. 

The CO2 reduction requirements in both regions are far beyond what’s achievable with conventional vehicle and internal combustion engine improvements. To address this challenge automotive industry has been spending significant efforts on battery electric vehicles (BEV), hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (H2 FCEV), and hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2 ICE). 

The challenge and the risk for these powertrain architectures in the early 2030s is the readiness of the infrastructure. Therefore, Hybrid powertrains could play a vital role in early stages of de-carbonization of heavy-duty transportation industry.
