Summary
The transport industry is facing an extensive technological shift towards electrification to build an environmentally sustainable future. Also MAN is working towards electrification of the complete vehicle portfolio. To do this, it is very important to have a deep understanding of the socio-economic drivers that are giving the regulatory boundaries. These boundaries are influencing the OEMs and the commercial vehicle customers to the same extend. We as MAN have a long-standing relationship to our customers, what gives us the opportunity to adapt continuously to their changing needs. This close relationship has enabled us to recognize technological changes at an early stage and to accompany them methodically.
An important core competence for adaption is MANs variance management and the modular toolkit approach. Starting from that flexible backbone, we took the chance to investigate our complete vehicle portfolio regarding the potential changing technology. The article describes MANs path to zero emission from the first layout activities to MANs 5-step approach that has evolved over time to a profound methodology for portfolio transformation.
An overview of the biggest technological challenges for energy storage, propulsion units and charging systems is bridging the gap from the methodology to the recent technical development.
