Summary

The car as we know it is changing radically. Vehicle manufacturing too is seeing a technological sea change. This systemic shift is determined not only by continuing innovations but also – and above all – by environmental legislation, rising fuel prices and urbanisation. For the BMW Group, continuing to deliver on the promise of the most fuelefficient ‘Sheer Driving Pleasure’ possible remains a key focus of research and development work as we move into the future. Engines and drivetrain technologies play a key role in this respect. As environmental policy evolves and the BMW Group continues working to meet the goals it has set for itself, new technologies are emerging in the shape of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. This article looks at how the BMW Group – as a vanguard and driver of change – is shaping this technological transformation, and outlines some of the innovations and offerings the Group is currently researching.
