Summary
Limiting CO2 emissions to a zero-impact level is one of the key challenges facing the transportation sector. This limit applies not only to ubiquitous daily on-road transport, but also to construction and agricultural machinery.
JCB, with the support of FEV, is one of the first agricultural and construction equipment engine manufacturers to design and produce an engine specifically for hydrogen combustion that produces no fuel-based carbon emissions while retaining all the key power and torque characteristics compared to a diesel engine. To achieve these performance goals, both port-fuel injection and direct-injection systems were investigated, with maximum commonality between diesel and hydrogen engines being the goal. Special software algorithms are used to support torque build-up during transient phases.
The performance and emission results obtained from bench tests as well as NRTC and PEMS measurements from real customer operating cycles underline the readiness of the hydrogen engine concept also with regard to future pollutant emission standards.
