Summary
The solution for the “right” drive in passenger cars from 2035 onwards is discussed again and again. How fast can the ramp-up of fully electric vehicles be and how many vehicles with combustion engines on board will still be needed? As part of the European “Green Deal”, the EU27 states decided to be climate-neutral by 2050. To this end, sector targets were defined for the transport sector, among others, and a reduction in tailpipe emissions for passenger cars to zero CO2 from 2035 was agreed. On the one hand, it is questionable whether this is realistically achievable due to the current slowdown in the BEV ramp-up; on the other hand, many experts are calling for technological openness. Therefore, in addition to battery electric drives, combustion engines and “eFUEL only” drives are analyzed, discussed and compared in this article with regard to their global warming potential and in terms of sustainability by means of LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). In addition, market analyses are presented regarding the availability of the energy sources required for the respective drive concepts. Further hybrid solutions are discussed and the further developments expected in the short term and up to 2035 with regard to battery and combustion engine efficiency are presented in technical detail. Plug-in hybrids are already part of the solution today. It is discussed how they must develop in the ramp-up of the CO2 reduction scenario and how long they can play a role. Based on these findings, feasible options for the year 2035 are compared with regard to climate neutrality.
