Summary

Thanks to the rapid advancements in energy storage and electric propulsion systems, especially in the areas of cost and efficiency balance, the e-mobility can now deliver products that can penetrate mass market applications. Electric mobility is no longer a niche solution, it has gained sufficient momentum in accelerating the transition towards CO2 reduction. However, new opportunities bring new challenges, e-mobility solution use high mineral content over predecessor technologies. Thus, a challenge would remain in continuous innovation towards sustainable designs without a compromise on performance, efficiency and reliability.

In this paper the team of experts from BorgWarner will share their perspective on current state of electric propulsion system including associated merits and challenges in respect of performance and efficiency followed by an engineering vision towards developing sustainable electric drives of future high performance and efficient e-Mobility solutions.

The paper will touch upon such a sustainable (Heavy Rare Earth – HRE free) concept electric drive design metrics, detailed overview of the system engineering (simulations and test results).
The paper will also outline four key advanced development topics used while designing sustainable electric drives. Each of these topics are using model-based approach engineering methodology:

- Electric Vehicle Digital Twin
- Modelling traction Inverter integration into a digital twin
- The modeling of the parasitic inductance of an inverter
- Exploration of PD, PDIV and RPDIV for inverter and E-machine system.

Towards the conclusion the paper will share a future perspective on areas of engineering innovation in developing sustainable electric drive designs with improved efficiency, enhanced performance, and reliable operation.
