H2ICE: An Additional Contribution to Defossilization

Summary

Parallel to the electrification of the powertrain, hydrogen opens up another promising possibility to advance the defossilization of heavy commercial vehicle traffic. In addition to the use of fuel cells, energy conversion can also take place in hydrogen combustion engines (H2ICE). This sustainable technology builds on the proven and established Diesel engine and represents a promising addition, especially for specific application areas or markets. The presentation provides insights into the current investigations by Daimler Truck AG on a 15.6 liters commercial vehicle engine. The focus is on design parameters and key technologies, such as the injection or charging system, which are of central importance for performance and torque, emission behavior, efficiency, and above all, the robustness of the H2ICE. It is also shown that, in addition to the technical challenges, the development of a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure remains the decisive factor for a successful market launch.
