Summary
The integration of hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel could be a promising strategy for significantly reducing energy-related CO2 emissions in the road transport sector. However, the unique combustion properties of hydrogen require the development of dedicated lubricants to ensure competitive reliability, power density and efficiency of this alternative technology.
This study aims to support the development of heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2-ICE) by identifying key optimization levers to mitigate the impact of lubricant on pre-ignition events. Specifically, the tendency of several prototype engine oils to induce pre-ignition has been comprehensively characterized experimentally in a demonstrator 13-liter heavy-duty hydrogen engine.
Our findings suggest that, by injecting a tiny amount of lubricant aerosol into the intake port of one cylinder, a strong pre-ignition response could be induced on that cylinder. The occurrence of pre-ignition was found to vary significantly depending on the specific lubricant used. By addressing the critical problem of the pre-ignition caused by the lubricant, this research makes a contribution to validating safety and efficiency of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel for ICE ensuring a more eco-friendly and carbon-free future.
