Summary

With the progressive electrification the demands on electric motors are increasing, as is their market potential. Motors require maximum power densities and efficiencies – as a result the cooling of the machines is a crucial element. In fact it is the key enabler for size reduction for electric motors. Focus must be on the winding, which has more than 90% of the heat losses.

As a high-tech start-up “dynamic E flow” provides a particularly efficient solution for the removal of heat from powertrains: Capcooltech®. The patented technology allows the windings of the motor to be made of hollow conductors, the cooling medium passing through that hollow. This allows the current density to be increased by several times during continuous operation of the machine without risking overheating of the winding. Together with the current density, the torque and power density increase, so that Dynamic E Flow can offer machines with compelling power densities.

In this session at the Vienna Motorensymposium 2023 a powertrain design for automotive will be presented increasing the power density by the factor of two compared to all existing designs.
