Summary

Hydrogen, Natural Gas, and Ammonia are key fuels for the future, offering low or even carbon-neutral solutions for our energy system which can be easily integrated with the growing global networks of renewable energy generation. To facilitate application of these fuels in mobility, high-performance, flexible, and precise injection and ignition systems for gaseous fuels are needed. PHINIA’s gaseous fuel injection and ignition systems are maturing after more than a decade of development. First-generation systems for port and low-pressure direct injection are now available. This paper discusses the current application status of first-generation systems, but also introduces PHINIA’s second-generation low-pressure direct injector, which has the potential to simplify the fuel system whilst maintaining or improving performance. A growing interest in gaseous systems for CNG and NH3 is evident in several markets. This paper also presents a combustion study between port and direct CNG injection showing the benefits derived from the direct injection system. Due to the very different combustion and ignition characteristics of the three gaseous fuels a fully flexible ignition system is required to meet all the ignition needs. This flexibility is also important for developing SI-ICE with long sparkplug lifetime (decreased TCO) and for fuel-agnostic engine designs capable of flex-fuel operation. Finally, PHINIA will present hydrogen combustion results from its new 13L Commercial Vehicle development platform, showcasing best-in-class performance with ITE > 45%.
