Summary

Hypercars occupy a unique position within the automotive landscape. They are built in very low numbers and prioritise power, emotion, speed and visual appeal above many other typical automotive requirements. They must, however, conform to many of the same standards as mainstream cars, including emissions compliance. The Zenvo Aurora is an all-new designed hypercar, with a no compromise performance.

At the heart of all Aurora models is a 6.6 litre quad-turbocharged V12 engine, developed by MAHLE Powertrain. Producing 1,250 bhp (932 kW) and revving to 9,800 rev/min, this bespoke, mid-mounted, powerplant is a 90° hot-V configuration. It is coupled with a triple electric motor hybrid system, which generates an additional 600 bhp (447 kW). The resulting 1,850 bhp powertrain seamlessly blends instant power and torque.

The paper describes the V12 engine clean-sheet design and initial test results together with a description of the vehicle hybrid system, in details of the design of the high voltage battery pack. The V12 engine incorporates the MAHLE Jet Ignition (MJI) pre-chamber combustion system. The method for integrating the pre-chambers within the head is novel and provides enhanced cooling to the prechamber and enables features to be included in the design. The 4.1 kWh high-voltage battery system features direct liquid cooling of the cells and can discharge at rates of up to 110 C.
