Summary
Cold start and cold operation have been identified as a key operation area to be improved for coming emissions regulations, especially in Europe and China. A further acceleration of the catalyst heating will be necessary. While in the past huge improvement have been achieved by passive measures, including close coupled mounting of the catalyst, inertia reduction and insulation, active heating within the exhaust system will be necessary to achieve a breakthrough.
Most of the powertrain will be electrified in the near future. The hybrid powertrains have different battery size and electrical network (12V, 48V, high voltage with different power levels). From simple on/off activation to complex catalyst preheating and temperature regulation strategies, the system can be tailored to reach a wide spectrum of objectives, reaching from simple PGM optimization to near zero emission vehicles
In this paper we will describe the electrically heated catalyst (EHC), validation and optimization. EHC durability has now been fully demonstrated under realistic lifetime conditions. The newest results of emission performance at -7°C, with direct heating and with flowless preheating are shown. 1D and 3D Simulations, as well as engine and vehicle tests results will be used to illustrate the technology performance and optimization.
