Summary
Highly automated driving functions (SAE level 3+) present OEMs with a multitude of challenges nowadays. Due to the large amount of variable parameters, the exploding number of necessary tests as well as the limited reproducibility, they cannot solely be tested and validated in real-world test drives. Virtual test driving allows to test and validate the software part of driving functions in various relevant and critical situations. One key requirement for this is the precise modeling of the sensors as well as the environment of the vehicle. Due to the impact of driving functions on the longitudinal and lateral dynamics, a sufficiently precise modeling of all relevant vehicle subsystems has to be considered as well. This paper exemplifies a complete toolchain for function development in the field of SAE level 3+ in combination with virtual prototypes. It outlines how highly automated driving functions can be developed, tested and validated in numerous relevant and critical driving situations. Furthermore, this paper illustrates how this approach may support the development of software that is playing an increasingly important part in the automotive industry.
