Summary
Nowadays the fuel economy regulation is getting more stringent, so the strategy of fuel economy is getting more important to the engineers for engine development. Even though downsizing is a key factor to improve fuel economy in vehicle currently, it would be the right time to improve the fuel economy of engine itself. Atkinson cycle can be a promising option to improve the fuel economy of engine and its utilization is being extended over the conventional vehicle. In the viewpoint of engine development, it would be proper to utilize the terminology, thermal efficiency, instead of fuel economy. Hyundai-Kia will introduce new Kappa 1.6L gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine dedicated for hybrid vehicle, starting production for world market in 2016.
