Summary
The history of technology is unthinkable without people who push the boundaries of technology and thus show what is possible. This was precisely the ambition behind the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX technology program. The goal: an electric car with a range of more than 1,000 km on just one battery charge in real-life road traffic. With an efficiency of 95% from battery to wheels and an energy consumption of less than 10 kWh per 100 km, it is the most efficient Mercedes ever.
Four aspects were crucial in the development of this car. First, the powertrain: Among other things, it contains a completely new, compact and lightweight battery pack with an energy density of just under 400 Wh/l. Sophisticated thermal management supports optimized use of energy. Secondly, the design: With a benchmark drag coefficient of cd 0.17, the VISION EQXX has world-class aerodynamics. Structural components in bionic mesh design were used for the lightweight bodywork, for example. Solar cells on the roof enable an additional range of up to 25 km. Third, digitization: The development of the VISION EQXX took just 18 months. This was achieved in particular by the extensive use of digital tools in design and virtual testing. Fourth, new forms of collaboration: The team consisted of the brightest minds from Mercedes-Benz's global research and development centers and racing teams. Innovative startups were also involved to test new materials and processes. The VISION EQXX is part of a far-reaching technology program that provides insights for Mercedes-Benz series production.
