Summary

It gets obvious that customers in Europe do not accept battery electric vehicles in the way it was thought. This might be based on the uncertainty of future battery developments, costs and loss of value reasoned on discussions about possible future driving range and charging efficiency. Also, only Europe is going the path of combustion engine ban by deciding “Non-Technology” neutral legislations.

But, in the world the full range of powertrain solutions will be seen for a long time. This goes from ICEs to mild- and plug-in hybrids, range extenders and BEVs. In addition, the combustion engines will be operated with all kinds of fuels like normal gasoline and diesel, bio- and e-fuels, LPG, CNG and hydrogen.

As a fact production numbers of high voltage hybrids will continue to grow and will have even in 2040 a significant share of all powertrains in the world. For this reason, also emission legislations in the different areas of the world will be further tightened. At least it can be assumed, that the todays known most stringent emission legislation will become a World Wide standard with a possible time delay of several years.

Beside CO2 tailpipe and life cycle emissions, the main task for future powertrain and catalyst developments will be cost reduction.
